The Brown Trout Festival in Alpena will keep your children entertained and takes place the third weekend in July. I never thought that I’d enjoy any kind of outdoor festival in July, but being outside and vacationing where there’s nice summer weather is completely possible with an Alpena weekend getaway unlike so many other family travel destinations.

If you are a treasure hunter,
Alpena, Michigan should be high on your list of summer vacation plans. Take one of the Alpena Michigan shipwreck tours and go scuba diving on one of the 200 shipwrecks. Another point of interest would be the Michigan lighthouse tour. You won’t want to miss a chance to admire these historic beauties. When the day is done and you’re all tuckered out from scuba diving and taking tours, Thunder Bay is a great place to book a few nights at a bed and breakfast resort. The Thunder Bay golf clubs and resorts are a must see for golfers and golf widows can surely get their diving, golfing lovers to spring for a weekend spa treatment as a reward for being such good sports while everybody is off exploring shipwrecks and diving for lost treasures.
THINGS TO SEE ON YOUR ALPENA, MI VACATION
In early spring and summer it seemed to me that there was some kind of festival, craft show or something going on practically every weekend. But if you happen to travel to Alpena in between events like I did, visit the local tourism center and they will give you lists of cool stuff to see and maps of Alpena to help you find them. I think that the Thunder Bay River and the lighthouses were among my favorite things to see while in Alpena.
Our Alpena vacation was an enjoyable Michigan family vacation and I encourage you to make it a your Alpena vacation a Michigan weekend getaway destination.
