My North Lake Tahoe Ski Vacation
by Ellen Theisman
We booked our Lake Tahoe ski vacation on the assumption that the ski conditions would be good until April. However, just to be safe we planned to actually take our Lake Tahoe vacation in March . We had been thinking about booking a vacation package there for several years because everyone said that Lake Tahoe was so beautiful and had such great skiing. I was almost ready to be disappointed because everybody had pumped it up so dramatically but I was pleasantly surprised.
For those who don't know anything about Lake Tahoe I will give you a little background. Lake Tahoe itself is a huge crystal clear mountain lake that can be as rough and choppy as the ocean during a rainstorm or calm and blue as the sky, depending on the time of day and weather conditions.
Our family chose to make reservations for our Lake Tahoe ski vacation in North Lake Tahoe rather than South Lake Tahoe. If you are looking for adult entertainment and swinging nightlife, I hear that South Lake Tahoe is the best place for this kind of vacation.
In my opinion there is very little nightlife in North Lake Tahoe which makes it perfect for a family with children. I didn't like the idea of my kids spending their vacation around young adults enjoying cocktails. In fact my husband and I were going to swap a night of babysitting each other's children so that we can go out and have dinner and dance. We quickly found that in order to spend the evening at a nightclub we would need to travel to North Lake Tahoe for any kind of a selection which was not a problem but something that singles might want to know.
The purpose of our Lake Tahoe ski vacation was not adult entertainment or nightlife. We went
for the family activities and the skiing. I can't begin to tell you how much better the mountains in Lake Tahoe Nevada are than even the best ski slopes on the East Coast. With temperatures in the 40s and 50s Fahrenheit you can skip the heat packs and numerous layers of clothing that you have to have when you ski on the East Coast.
You probably already know what you need to pack in the way of ski gear for your Lake Tahoe ski vacation but I would like to recommend that you buy a pair of 400% UV protection sunglasses rather than the usual 100% UV protection glasses you will be glad you did.
One of the mountains I would like to recommend you try first is Diamond. Diamond is small and doesn't have many slopes but the views are spectacular. This was the first mountain that we skied on our Lake Tahoe ski vacation and this small mountain sloping directly the Lake won my heart.
We enjoyed skiing Squaw Valley on an adults only day when our friends took the children on an outing. Some other tourists had told us that Squaw Valley was not the most child friendly ski area as it has some slopes that are geared towards advanced or intermediate skiers. I consider myself an above average level skier and some of the slopes were too advanced for my level of expertise. A good mountain for those taking family Lake Tahoe ski vacations would be Northstar Mountain which is one of the more child friendly ski areas.
We didn't make it to Heavenly Mountain but our friends had an excellent skiing experience there and I have heard that that many of the Lake Tahoe ski resorts
are conveniently located there and we plan to visit it on our next Lake Tahoe ski vacation
